The Word add-in

Overview

The Kontrakte.AI Office Add-In brings the contract-analysis capabilities of Kontrakte.AI directly into Microsoft Word. It is optional: the platform runs entirely in the browser at https://app.kontrakte.ai and needs no installation, plug-in or VPN. The add-in is intended for users who prefer to work in the familiar Word environment.

Unlike the web application — which converts uploaded PDF documents into searchable text through an integrated OCR step before analysis — the add-in processes the open document directly as a Word file.

Requirements

To install and use the add-in you need:

  • Microsoft Word (Microsoft 365) — the add-in installs into and runs inside Microsoft Word as an Office add-in, within a Microsoft 365 environment.
  • An active Kontrakte.AI subscription — the add-in's functionality is tied to a valid Kontrakte.AI subscription. Functionality ceases if the underlying subscription is terminated or suspended.
  • Network access — the add-in communicates with the Kontrakte.AI servers to perform the AI analysis.

Installing the add-in

The Kontrakte.AI Office Add-In can be installed in two ways: directly from within Microsoft Word, or through the Microsoft Store on the web. The exact availability depends on your tariff and your organisation's Microsoft 365 configuration. If the add-in is not available for your account, please contact us.

Directly in Word

In Word, open the add-ins management, search for Kontrakte.AI and add the add-in. After installation, Kontrakte.AI is available as a button in the ribbon.

The add-in interface

After signing in, the add-in opens as a task pane next to your document in Word. The home screen of the task pane brings together the available features, each of which works on the document currently open:

  • Smart Check — analyses the content of the document currently open.
  • Playbook Check — runs a playbook against the open document.
  • Draft contracts — creates a first draft in a reviewed Word document.
  • Customise document — adjusts your document with AI assistance.

Which features are shown depends on the features included in your tariff.

Checking a document

Two features are available for checking the document currently open: the Smart Check and the Playbook Check.

Smart Check

The Smart Check is a fast AI-assisted initial assessment of the open document. Relevant content is automatically highlighted and categorised, so you can immediately identify critical points.

Configuring the check

Open the Smart Check in the task pane. The system reads key data from the document; review and complete the details:

  • Own party/parties and Other party/parties — the swap icon reverses the assignment.
  • Contract type — for example NDA.
  • Focus points (optional) — a free-text field for points to pay explicit attention to.
  • Document language (required).
  • Applicable law (required) — for example German law.
  • More options — a collapsible area with additional settings.

Start the analysis with Start check.

Check in progress

During the analysis, the task pane shows the progress. Depending on the document length and server load, the check may take some time.

Results

Once complete, the findings are shown as a list; the relevant passages are highlighted in the document. Counters at the top show the number of problems (red), warnings (yellow) and notes (blue); a search field lets you search the findings.

Reviewing a finding

Clicking a finding opens the detail view with the question asked, the AI's assessment and an improvement suggestion. Use Apply to insert the suggestion directly into the document.

Playbook Check

The Playbook Check applies your own rules and checklists (playbooks) to the open document, so that recurring contracts are evaluated consistently and in line with defined guidelines.

Selecting a playbook

First select the checklist to use as a playbook. Use the search field to find a specific checklist quickly; mark the desired checklist and confirm with Next.

Next, set the required details — Document language, Applicable law and the selected playbook; additional settings are available under More options. Start the analysis with Start check. Depending on the document length and server load, the evaluation may take some time.

Results

Once complete, the checklist is shown grouped by folders in the task pane, for example a group covering term and termination with the individual entries. Each entry carries a coloured robot icon indicating the assessment: red for a negative, green for a positive and purple for an unclear or other assessment. The toolbar at the top lets you filter the entries accordingly. Every group and entry can be expanded; Re-check runs the check again.

Entry detail

Clicking an entry opens its detail view. It contains the AI's assessment, one or more sources with the relevant passages and references into the document, and an improvement suggestion. The relevant passages are highlighted in the document.

Editing

Beyond checking, the add-in supports editing directly in Word.

Customise document

With Customise document, you revise content directly in the document with AI assistance.

Describe the change

In the field asking which changes you would like to the document, describe the desired adjustment — for example reducing the term to five years. Optionally narrow down the affected location via the search scope or your selection; additional settings are available under More options. Confirm with Submit.

Review and apply the suggestion

The AI generates a change suggestion that shows the adjustment as a comparison of old and new text, together with an explanatory comment. Apply the suggestion with Apply or discard it with Discard; use Apply all or Discard all to handle several suggestions at once.
