On 4 November 2025, Benjamin Berger and Raphael Hettich of Consiliari Software GmbH spoke at data2day in Karlsruhe together with Prof. Dr. Uwe Haneke of Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA). Their topic: “Digitalisation with AI support: making contract management more efficient”.
The talk went further into the technology than earlier appearances. The starting point was a responsible authority in which a small number of caseworkers review many contracts made up of combinable service modules.
One part dealt with pre-processing. Contracts arrive as scans, PDFs or word-processing files, with hyphenation, page breaks and multi-column layouts. These texts are cleaned up first and then matched against stored rules. An embedding model specialised in legal texts, the model that prepares texts for matching, is deliberately not used, because many documents mix everyday language with the terminology of the social sector. Instead, legally relevant terms are weighted during matching.
Another part concerned learning. Kontrakte.AI learns within the platform, not by training the language model. Reviewers' annotations give rise to suggestions for new rules, which a person checks before they apply.
Finally, the talk turned to sources. A language model's reasoning on its own is not enough in practice. Specialists want to know which ruling or guideline a statement is based on. This is why Kontrakte.AI connects its own model texts, guidelines and rulings as knowledge sources and cites the passage.
The same principle applies at every step: the AI pre-checks, people decide. The content of the talk fed into a book chapter. The programme entry is available on the data2day website.
